This book is structured in such a way that can be initially intimidating. Each chapter is quite short and is filled with seemingly complicated diagrams. However, I soon realized this organization was extremely helpful in approaching the sometimes dry subject matter of biochemistry.
Instead of being lost in a quagmire of confusing pathways written as text as I had seen in other books, the author only writes briefly and to the point about important aspects of each of the topics. This allows the student to go back and logically navigate through each of the large sequences. I must admit; however, the text is not always very logically ordered and got a little confusing in certain sections. Sometimes it was necessary to take each paragraph as its stand alone idea and not as a logical flow of thought.
Lastly, the author thoughtfully recognized the need to address the student's comprehension following each section due to the amount of details of each subject. Placed at the end of each chapter are a list of objectives as well as a series of multiple choice questions. The multiple choice are a wonderful way to test yourself to see if you actually paid attention while you read the section. The objectives are best used after studying the concepts and mastering the diagrams.
I would strongly recommend this book to any veterinary or medical student looking for a comprehensive and relatively easy to follow venture into the world of biochemistry.
This is one of the worst textbooks that I have seen. The biochemical pathways are drawn overly complex in a single figure (like the infamous "spaghetti slide" by the US Defense Department), when they could be simplified into multiple diagrams. The written text almost seems obligatory to fill up space and is basically a narration of the figures; it provides very little added insight and is extremely dry, even for a biochemistry text. The text is laid out so that it is very difficult to reference figures while you are reading. The clinical correlates are few, disappointing, and overly simple.
Overall, the book is laid out in multiple small chapters that are tied together in only the most superficial way: the particular unit of chemistry that is being discussed (e.g. carbohydrate chemistry, nucleic acid chemistry, etc.). In fact, early chapters often reference later chapters. If you are taking a veterinary biochemistry course, unless your instructor is really testing you on the specific nuances on this particular book, DON'T BUY IT! Use an undergraduate-level biochemistry book and see if you can get your hands on a human medical biochemistry book (diabetes mellitus has the same biochemistry in dogs as it does in humans).
What a waste of money!
